Abstract

The aim of the current research was to analyze the performance gap in the higher education system. The subject of study was Islamic Azad University of North Khorasan province. This research is developmental in terms of purpose, exploratory in terms of approach, and mixed (qualitative-quantitative) in terms of data analysis. In the qualitative phase of the research, a group of experts including university professors, senior managers of higher education, and experienced consultants in the field of higher education management were considered as the statistical population. In this phase, 15 experts were selected using the theoretical sampling method. The main tool of data collection in the qualitative phase of the research was in-depth and semi-structured interviews with experts. In the qualitative phase of the research, the data from the interviews were analyzed based on the theme analysis method. In the quantitative phase, all faculty members of North Khorasan Islamic Azad University were considered as the population, and among them, 113 people were selected as a statistical sample based on stratified random sampling with proportional distribution. In the quantitative phase of the research, a closed and researcher-made questionnaire consisting of 15 items was used as the main tool for data collection. The validity and reliability of this questionnaire was examined and confirmed by different methods (content validity, Cronbach's reliability and composite reliability). In the quantitative phase of the research, SPSS and smart-PLS software were used to perform descriptive and inferential analyses. Finally, the results of the research led to the design of the performance evaluation model of the higher education system in the form of three dimensions of education, knowledge and culture, which included fifteen indicators. In addition, based on the resulting model, the Islamic Azad University of North Khorasan Province was also evaluated for its performance and ten performance gaps were identified in this university, and solutions were tried to be proposed to overcome these gaps.
